Passkeys: Relief for our Password Problems?
Do you love creating, remembering, and entering passwords like I do? I thought so. Let's face it–passwords are a pain in the neck. Plus, they're an imperfect solution to the persistent problem of keeping our accounts safe.
Good news is on the way, though. Apple, Google, and Microsoft have all recently committed to replacing passwords with a safer, easier alternative: passkeys. When you create an account with a website or an app, the system generates a unique key that is tied to your private key stored on your device. When you log in, you can authenticate using fingerprint or facial recognition, just as you would for logging into your device. The passkey stored on your device is never visible to you or anyone, thus preventing malicious websites and phishing attacks from stealing your login information.
Unfortunately, the passkey revolution isn't happening all at once. It's currently being rolled out as more and more websites and apps adopt its use. Be patient, relief is on its way!
